… and ‘La Métairie des Songes’ ~ what does it mean?
It is partially based on modern & ancient French. An adjacent area of land is called la Métairie des Monges. Monge(s) is an old word for moine (or monk(s). A Métairie is a name suggesting a smallholding or farmhouse, sometimes with crop sharing. Therefore monks had worked the ancient lands to provide food. The addition of Songes was a spot of word-play concocted by the Notaire at the time when we bought the house, as it means reflection, consideration or wonder. All of these words describe the feelings that were experienced when we arrived here all those years ago!
